CAP-INO Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Applied Photonics

The objective of this award is to recognize outstanding contributions in applied photonics. This prize is intended to acknowledge innovative applications of photonics to solve practical problems, leading to economic benefits (for example, the development of a new instrument based on photonics, devices that accomplish new functions, etc.). The innovation must be commercializable or, at the least, exploitable. The National Optics Institute (INO) and the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) introduced this biennial joint medal in 1998. The medal is not limited to CAP members but the candidates' research/instrumentation development should have been undertaken in Canada or in affiliation with a Canadian organization.

The 2010 medal was awarded to
Prof. Xiaoyi Bao, University of Ottawa, for her outstanding achievements on the physics, technology and applications of optical fiber sensors. Her contributions on distributed sensors based on Brillouin loss, on simultaneous and strain sensing and on safety of structures are of high relevance in these days of aging infrastructures.

The next medal will be awarded in the year 2012. Deadline for nominations is January 10, 2012.

Nomination Criteria

  • The nominator must be a member of the CAP.
  • The nominee must be a member in good standing of the CAP or a Council-approved Canadian professional science society (see list below) in order to be nominated.
  • The nominee must have spent the major part (i.e. more than one-half) of his/her working career in Canada or must have made a major contribution to applied photonics after returning to a permanent position in Canada.

The nominee must belong to one of the following societies to be eligible for the CAP-INO Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Applied Photonics:

  • Canadian Association of Physicists
  • Canadian Astronomical Society
  • Canadian Geophysical Union
  • Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society
  • Canadian Organization for Medical Physicists
  • Canadian Society for Chemistry
