The Annual Canada-Wide Science Fair, held May 2009 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was once again a resounding success! Over $150,000 in cash, scholarships,and other prizes were won by the participating students. This year, the CAP sponsored an award for the best physics projects in the senior category. The prize consisted of a cash award of $1,000 plus a CAP plaque commemorating their achievement. The winner of the 2009 CAP prize was :

It's Time to Make a "Radon" the Basements

This project was an experiment to determine the most effective and efficient system used to remove radon from basements. A model home was built and tested using carbon dioxide gas to gather comparative results. Building a sub-slab filled with gravel and using a fan to create a negative air pressure within the sub-slab was the most effective system.

About our winner

At the time of the award, Tegan Wiebe was a grade 12 student at W.C. Eaket Secondary School in Ontario. She hopes to attend McGill University this year to become an architect and, eventually, work abroad. Her passions are vast and numerous. She enjoys mountain biking, tennis, basketball, photography, and playing the piano. In the past two years she has competed at the OFSAA level for tennis and the NOSSA level for long jump in track and field. She was also a leader for the community youth group and she volunteered in a program that talks to grade 7’s and 8’s about peer pressure.
