Control over the carrier-envelope phase of an ultrafast optical pulse train has led to dramatic progress in both ultrafast optical science and precision spectroscopy; in this paper we discuss what exactly is the CEP, how it is measured and controlled and then highlight some current and future applications of CEP-stabilized lasers.
