Solutions to global environmental problems are sought in a government laboratory using applied physics, in a setting that combines the efforts of federal researchers, visiting postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduate students participating in co-operative education programs.

We discuss several problems and current areas of research.  We highlight how physical principles are central to understanding the dynamics and long-term consequences of ecosystems - with the aim of encouraging physicists to explore such challenging environmental problems.
