BCS theory with an isotropic s-wave superconducting gap (D) has been very successful in understanding many of the properties seen in conventional superconductors. Nevertheless, several extensions are essential in understanding some data. These include anisotropy in the gap, energy dependence in the electronic density of states, N(E), the multiband nature of the electronic structure, and the dynamics of the pairing interaction.
