In 1967, Ursula Franklin was the first woman appointed to the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science at the University of Toronto, and in 1984 she was the first woman to be appointed University Professor. Dr. Franklin is a member of the order of Ontario, a companion of the Order of Canada and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 1991, she was granted the Governor General's award and, in 2002, she received the Pearson Peace Medal from the United Nations Association in Canada in recognition of her humanitarian work.
