The history of laser development in Canada is chronicled, starting with the original military motivation for the development of Laser range-finding.  The story moves on through the development of the TEA laser, the development of great capabilities in government labs, university labs and spin-off companies and the use of lasers in fiber-optic communications, culminating in the present-day Canadian pre-eminence in the science of ultra-short laser pulses.
