Byron Southern has been a CAP member since 1973. He obtained a B.Sc. (69) at York University followed shortly thereafter by a M.Sc. (71) and Ph.D. (73) at McMaster University in theoretical condensed matter physics. He spent two years at Imperial College in London, U.K. working as an NRC Postdoctoral Fellow with David Sherrington. From 1975 to 1979 he held a staff scientist position in the theory college headed by Philipe Nozières at the Institut Laue Langevin in Grenoble, France. He joined the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manitoba in 1979. He has spent sabbaticals at the Centre d’Etudes Nucléaires (Saclay) in Paris, France, the University of California at Santa Cruz and also at Michigan State University.

Dr. Southern has served on national grant selection committees, NSERC and NASA, and also as Associate Head of the department. He has served as chair of the WestGrid executive for the past 3 years and is currently on the National Initiatives Committee of Compute Canada. He uses extensive computational resources to simulate and study models of magnetic materials.
