President's Message (June 11, 2010)

As President for 2010-2011, I welcome you to the website of the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP). Founded in 1945, and now with over 1600 members, CAP serves Canadian physics researchers, teachers and students in academia, industry and government. We support physics research, education and science policy initiatives and provide a voice for Canadian physicists to government, granting agencies, and international scientific societies.

In this web site, you can find contact information for the CAP office, its Council and divisions, as well as details about membership. You will also be amazed by the extent of CAP activities, including:

  • The quarterly publication, Physics in Canada
  • science policy initiatives
  • medals and awards
  • the annual congress
  • the professional certification program
  • the CAP lecture tour
  • profiles on careers in physics
  • initiatives promoting women in physics
  • employment postings
  • activities in support of physics students and physics education
  • the Art of Physics competition

Like my predecessors, I hope to make the activities of the society important and relevant to its members. If you have suggestions, or concerns, please send them to me. If you are not already actively involved in CAP activities try to find a way to become involved.

I feel so passionately about the accomplishments and goals of the CAP, that, if it didn’t exist, I would be in the front ranks of those working to create it.

with best wishes,

Henry M. van Driel, Ph.D., P.Phys.
