Andrew Yau

Dr. Andrew Yau is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University of Calgary. An active member of CAP and the Division of Atmospheric and Space Physics (DASP) since 1980, he previously served as CAP Councillor and DASP Chair and Secretary-Treasurer.

Dr. Yau obtained his doctorate from York University in 1978. His research interest is in space plasma physics and the Earth’s ionosphere and magnetosphere, specifically satellite observations of plasma energization and transport and the physics of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. He was Principal Investigator (PI) in several Canadian sounding rocket and international scientific satellite missions, and is currently the Mission PI for the CASSIOPE Enhanced Polar Outflow Probe (e-POP), a small satellite involving several research teams from across and outside Canada for studying the effects of space weather in the upper atmosphere.

Dr. Yau is the author of over 120 peer-reviewed papers, and currently serves as Associate Editor for the Geophysical Research Letters, a member of the NSERC Discovery Grants Evaluation Group, IUGG (International Union of Geophysics and Geology) Canadian National Committee (CNC), and IAGA (International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy) Executive Committee, respectively, and Commission C Vice-Chair of COSPAR (International Committee of Space Research).
