John Dutcher is a Professor of Physics and the Canada Research Chair in Soft Matter Physics at the University of Guelph. His research interests are in experimental polymer physics and biological physics, focusing on the properties of polymers and biopolymers at interfaces and in thin films. He received his B.Sc. in Engineering Physics at Dalhousie University, his M.Sc. in Physics from the University of British Columbia, and he completed his Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics at Simon Fraser University in 1989. After spending almost two years as a NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Optical Sciences Center at the University of Arizona, he began a faculty position at the University of Guelph in 1990. At Guelph, he has served as the Director of the Centre for Food and Soft Materials Science since 1990, and as the Director of the Nanoscience Program since 2010. He received the Premier’s Research Excellence Award in 2000, was named the Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Soft Matter Physics in 2006, and was elected to be a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2007. He served as an Editor of the Journal of Polymer Science, Part B: Polymer Physics from 2008-2010, and now serves as a Special Advisory Editor for the Journal. He also serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for Soft Matter.
Professor Dutcher has been a member of the CAP for 20 years. He was a member of the NSERC Grant Selection Committee for Condensed Matter Physics from 2005-08 and served as Chair in 2007-8. Professor Dutcher’s teaching currently focuses on nanoscience and biophysics at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
