Learning Opportunities Outside the Classroom

R. Brooks and H. Graves-Smith, Canada Science and Technology Museum, Ottawa ON K1G 5A3

Science and technology museums and science centres provide an alternate avenue to learning science, especially for younger students. Despite early optimism that the hands-on approach would be a universally effective technique, we now know that the approach is more successful for some learning styles. Among other things, they do provide examples of applications of scientific principles. This paper will share what resources are available and how to access them to best effect for a variety of audiences including university students and adults. Museums that deal with science and tech, in addition to exhibits, will have resources such as artifacts, files related to their use and design, images, trade literature and curatorial staff.
