An international steering committee has been set up by IUPAP to coordinate efforts from each country and the first international meeting was held in Graz, Austria on 6-9 July 2003. It was arranged that Alan Chodos of the APS Executive, who is also a CAP member, represented Canada on our behalf and presented our plans to the meeting.
The general scope of events, as decided by the CAP Executive and Council, is outreach to the wider community at the local level. It was also decided that the theme of events should be "100 years of Canadian physics", recognizing that the events will celebrate the more than 100 years of physics in Canada.
Events will be held throughout the year at the national/provincial-territorial/regional/local level, but the main thrust will be at the local level. This means that a large number of teams of organizers will have to be established to perform planning functions at the local level. This can be coordinated through Chairs of physics departments, CAP Friends, CAP Council and the CAP membership at large. The CAP has established an organizing committee whose function will be to help raise funds, instigate and coordinate events, and raise public awareness. Planning for events will also be coordinated with the APS, where appropriate.
As the CAP will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2005, special events will also be held in conjunction with the CAP's 2005 Congress at the University of British Columbia. The CAP's website will act as the central information center for events being coordinated within Canada. |
