Herzberg Memorial Lecture at CAP Congress

A series of Public lectures, entitled "Was Einstein Right", being given by Dr. Clifford Will of Washington University, Missouri. Opening of the SNO Exhibit at the Museum of Science and Technology

We in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory scientific collaboration are very pleased that our project has been chosen as an exhibit at the Museum of Science and Technology during the Year of Physics 2005. This year has been chosen to commemorate the major advances in the fundamental laws of physics that were represented by Einstein's seminal papers of 1905. Our own scientific objectives have also been to provide new insights on the most fundamental laws of physics. These insights are at the most microscopic level as well as at the furthest reaches of our Universe in space and time. With SNO and the new SNOLAB International Underground Facility currently under construction. read more

The Eratosthenes Experiment

The World Year of Physics 2005 is a United Nations endorsed, international celebration of physics. Events throughout the year will highlight the vitality of physics and its importance in the coming millennium and will commemorate the pioneering contributions of Albert Einstein in 1905. Through the efforts of a worldwide collaboration of scientific societies, the World Year of Physics brings the excitement of physics to the public and will inspire a new generation of scientists.

GLOBE Europe wants to highlight The World Year of Physics by conducting the Eratosthenes experiment. This means that we will repeat a 2200 year old experiment and measure the size of the Earth by using shadows. This experiment was chosen by physicists to be the seventh most beautiful experiment in the history. view event details - view website

Borealis String Quartet Perform "From Water to Ice"
Borealis String Quartet

As part of the Canadian effort for WYP2005, the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) has commissioned the composition of a String Quartet to be played by the critically acclaimed Borealis String Quartet. The composition, From Water to Ice, will be premiered at the Chan Center for the Performing Arts at UBC just before the Herzberg Memorial Lecture (by Clifford Will on "Was Einstein Right?"); which will open the Annual Congress of the CAP on June 5th 2005 .

Aaron Hryciw's musical score From Water to Ice elicited a similarily physics-based piece of artwork from Nicole MacDonald. The composer of the piece (From Water to Ice), is Aaron Hryciw, who is a student of Malcom Forsyth's and also a PhD candidate in physics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Read more about Aaron in the January issue of "Physics Update" from the University of Alberta. Nicole MacDonald is the illustrator, of the cover for Aaron's score.

The CAP has the rights to eight performances of the string quartet which we have commissioned for the World Year of Physics 2005. One will be at the premiere at the Chan Centre on June 5th. The other seven are available. Please let CAP know if you are interested in having a local quartet in your area perform this piece as part of a WYP2005 event, or as a prelude to a lecture by Clifford Will or by someone else.

Copenhagen

"Copenhagen" will be performed in Vancouver, February 26 to March 19, 2005 at the Vancouver Play House Theatre Company. Find out more here: Click for details

In 1941, German physicist Werner Heisenberg traveled to Nazi occupied Denmark to meet with his Jewish mentor Niels Bohr. What occurred between the two titans of modern physics forms the central mystery of this Tony Award-winning play.

Subtle Technologies symposium

8th Annual Subtle Technologies Festival Find out more here

This year our symposium hosts an international roster of artists and scientists presenting topics that range from dance to the latest ideas in particle theory. With our symposium we are joining the international science community in celebrating the World Year of Physics. While physics is a sub theme that runs through this year's program, we will be presenting many other ideas from a variety of disciplines. In bringing together a number of fields that don't normally collide, our symposium strives to build new bridges between people and ideas.
