Stoicheff Scholarship – Winners

2020

The 2020 CAP-Optica Foundation Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Matthew Robbins of the University of Waterloo by the Optica Foundation.

2019

The 2019 CAP-Optica Foundation Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship was awarded to An Pan, Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM), China by the Optica Foundation.

2018

The 2018 CAP-Optica Foundation Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship was awarded by the CAP Foundation to Aimee K. Gunther of the University of Waterloo for exceptional initiative in novel applications of entangled two-photon spectroscopy to biological imaging, and her leadership role in organizing and raising funds for an optics display at the Kitchener Museum to commemorate the UNESCO International Year of Light in 2015.

The 2019 CAP-Optica Foundation Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Robin Puchert of the Universität Regensburg by the Optica Foundation.

2017

The 2017 CAP-Optica Foundation Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ali Kazemi Jahromi of the University of Central Florida by the Optica Foundation.

2016

The 2016 CAP-Optica Foundation Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship was awarded by the CAP Foundation to Christopher Pugh of the University of Waterloo for his research and novel technological developments related to long distance transmission of entangled photons and foundational tests of three-photon entanglement as well as for his contributions to both the physics and broader communities. Christopher has engaged industry in his research and has contributed to physics outreach into schools. As both an undergraduate and graduate student he has led and organized physics student associations and conferences. Christopher Pugh has also been involved with and a leader in charitable organizations and fundraising efforts that have benefited the broader local communities in Brandon, Manitoba and the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

2015

The 2015 CAP-Optica Foundation Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Itai Epstein of Tel-Aviv University by the Optica Foundation.

2014

The 2014 CAP-Optica Foundation Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship was awarded by the CAP Foundation to Juan Nicolas Quesada of University of Toronto for his innovative work in quantum tomography and quantum optics, and for his service to the physics community in mentoring high school students in optics and in his science outreach work to the community at large. Nicolas has shown himself to be a versatile young scientist that has a passion for communicating science to people of all ages.

2013

The 2013 CAP-Optica Foundation Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Yanhui Zhao of Penn State University by the Optica Foundation.

2012

The inaugural Stoicheff Memorial Graduate scholarship was awarded to Wilson Brenna from the University of Waterloo who, as an undergraduate and graduate student, has demonstrated both academic excellence as well as leadership in helping to organize conferences and being on the Executive of committees to benefit his fellow students. The $3k (Cdn) prize award was presented to Wilson during the 2012 CAP Congress at the University of Calgary.
