CAP Fellows Program
This honour recognizes an active member of the CAP who meets the eligibility criteria defined below. Members awarded this distinction will use the designation of FCAP or FACP.
CAP members are invited to nominate CAP members eligible to receive the award of “Fellow of CAP” (FCAP) or “Fellow de l’ACP” (FACP) for consideration for the 2023 awards.
NOTE: Recipients of the CAP Medal for Lifetime Achievement do not need to be nominated through the regular nomination process (see MfLA information in the Administration section below for their nomination process).

Nominations are confidential to the CAP. Each nomination file is valid for three years, but must, on an annual basis, be reviewed, and if appropriate updated (e.g. c.v.), to remain active.
Nomination packages may be submitted in either English or French. The CAP is committed to ensuring that applications submitted in either official language are treated equitably.

Administration
As this is the official launch of the nomination process for Fellows, the entire program (especially the evaluation criteria and guidelines) will be reviewed following the first selection committee and adjustments made as necessary to improve this program to ensure it adheres to the CAP’s EDI vision.
There are three committees involved in the Fellows program: the CAP Nominations and Awards Committee, the CAP Fellows Oversight Committee, and the FCAP Selection Committee.
CAP Nominations and Awards Committee
The CAP Nominations and Awards Committee (CNAC), chaired by the CAP’s Past President, is responsible for recommending the Chair for the FCAP Oversight Committee to the CAP Board for an appointment, and for inviting the CAP EDI Advisory Committee to appoint a member to serve on this Oversight Committee. The CNAC appoints the remaining members of the Oversight Committee as well as the Chair and members of the Selection Committee, ensuring that the membership of each committee is diverse and representative of the CAP community and that each member has had relevant EDI training. The CNAC submits the slate of FCAP recommendations to the CAP Board for endorsement and considers any recommendations for changes to the program from the Oversight Committee.
FCAP Awards Oversight Committee
The process for soliciting nominations, evaluating, and recommending CAP members for the FCAP Award is managed by the FCAP Awards Oversight Committee (FAOC) comprised of a minimum of three members. This diverse Committee reports to the Awards and Nominations Committee chaired by the CAP’s Past President. The Chair of the FCAP Awards Oversight Committee will be appointed by the CAP Board, for a term of 3 years, from among CAP members who, in steady state, hold the FCAP Award (or similar recognition). The FCAP Award Oversight Committee Chair will work with the appointed EDI Committee representative to identify a diverse group of CAP members who should be considered by the CAP Nominations and Awards Committee to serve on either the Oversight Committee or the Selection Committee. In a steady state, at least two members of the Oversight Committee should be FCAP holders or CAP members of similar status.
The FAOC reviews all nominations to ensure that the nominee has met the experience requirement before the nomination is forwarded to the Selection Committee for consideration.
The FAOC oversees the work of the FCAP Selection Committee and ensures that the evaluation process was properly followed in the development of the slate of recommended FCAP recipients. The FAOC is responsible for reviewing the FCAP program after each cycle and submitting recommendations for any changes to the CNAC for consideration.
FCAP Selection Committee
The evaluation and recommendation of the slate of FCAPs will be made by a diverse FCAP Selection Committee (FSC). The members of the Selection Committee will be appointed by the CAP Awards and Nominations Committee for a term of 3 years, with the terms of the inaugural committee set up with staggered terms of 1 to 3 years.
FCAP Targets and Special Considerations
The yearly target for new FCAP appointments is 1% of the full membership of the CAP, including Full, Joint, and Foreign memberships. The complement of FCAPs will not exceed 10% of the full membership, unless so approved by the CAP Board. Those awarded FCAP through special consideration (Nobel prize or recipient of CAP Medal for Lifetime Achievement) will not count against the annual allocation of FCAP awards, but will count towards the total FCAP allocation. Retired members who are awarded FCAP will count against the annual allocation of FCAP awards, but will not count toward the total FCAP allocation.
The two current CAP members who have been awarded part of a Nobel Prize for their work in Physics and who met the membership eligibility criteria and agreed to the CAP Code of Ethics were awarded our inaugural FCAPs in 2022. CAP members who are awarded parts of Nobel Prizes for their work in physics in the future and who meet the membership eligibility criteria and agree to the CAP Code of Ethics will automatically be awarded an FCAP within the next available cohort.
Each current CAP member who has been awarded the CAP Medal for Lifetime Achievement (MfLA) and who meets the membership eligibility requirement, more than one of the contribution categories, and agrees to adhere to the CAP Code of Ethics will be awarded an FCAP over a five year period, starting in 2023. The CAP office will contact the existing cohort of MfLA’s who meet the membership eligibility requirement and invite them to apply for consideration for FCAP by providing evidence of how they meet at least one of the other contribution categories (the receipt of the MfLA signifies that they have met the research impact category). The FCAP Oversight Committee will have responsibility for determining whether responding MfLAs meet the eligibility requirement for their identified additional contribution category(ies). The CAP Office will submit the list of eligible MfLAs to the Chair of the CAP’s Nominations and Awards Committee (updated each year to verify continued membership eligibility). These FCAPs will normally be awarded on the basis of the earliest MfLA recipients first. CAP members who are awarded the MfLA in the future will automatically be awarded an FCAP within the next available cohort provided they meet the membership eligibility requirement, provide evidence of meeting more than one of the contribution categories, and agree to adhere to the CAP Code of Ethics.
The CAP Presidential line (Vice-President Elect through to Past President) are ineligible for nomination as an FCAP while they are serving on the CAP Presidential line. Members of the FCAP Oversight Committee or FCAP Selection Committee are similarly ineligible for nomination as an FCAP while they are serving on these committees.
