TRIUMF Tours

Canada’s particle accelerator centre is home to the world’s largest cyclotron particle accelerator and a system of high-energy rare isotope beams that enable a diversity of efforts in nuclear and particle physics, accelerator science, life science research, and more!

Tour participants get first-hand experience with many of TRIUMF’s experiments and facilities as we follow the path of the proton from its origin bound in a hydrogen atom to its destination in targets and detectors.

Tour Dates and Times

Tours take place on Thursday June 6th, and Friday June 7th at 8:30am.

Tour Schedule

8:30am  – Bus leaves SFU
90 minutes Tour of TRIUMF Facility
11:30am – Bus leaves UBC TRIUMF for SFU

Location

Participants will meet at SFU’s Transportation Center/Lower Bus Loop.

Register for a TRIUMF Tour to guarantee a spot. Each tour is limited to 45 people.


Trottier Observatory Tour

Nestled within the heart of the Burnaby campus, the Trottier Observatory is the flagship facility in the Faculty of Science’s myriad outreach programs.

The observatory is located at the east end of campus near Strand Hall. It features a six-meter-diameter dome housing a 0.7-metre diameter reflector telescope that is capable of tracking distant galaxies billions of years old.

The telescope will also provide a digital feed and can be remotely accessed and deployed by community groups and schools across Canada. You can check out the latest images from the telescope here.

The viewing plaza offers a sundial, space for people to set up their own telescopes next to the dome, and an outdoor gallery featuring illuminated seasonal star charts.

Tour Dates and Times

This single tour takes place on Monday June 3rd from 21:00 to midnight.
This tour is weather dependent. In the event of rain, the tour will be cancelled.

Participants will meet at SFU’s Trottier Obervatory and Science Courtyard (see SFU’s Campus Map here).

Registration

No registration necessary.
The Observatory can accommodate 200 people, participation is on a first-come-first-served basis.

2019 CAP Congress participants are invited to tour D-Wave Systems in Burnaby, BC.

General Fusion Tour

2019 CAP Congress participants are invited to tour General Fusion in Burnaby, BC. 

General Fusion was founded in 2002 with a goal to transform the world’s energy supply by developing the fastest, most practical, and cost-competitive path to commercial fusion power.

In 2006, Dr. Michel Laberge completed proof-of-principle experiments, and with the support of leading venture capital firms, General Fusion began building a team that today is recognized as a global leader in commercial fusion energy.

The company has now grown to a team of more than 70 at its world class laboratories in Burnaby, just outside Vancouver, where it is developing the key components of the world’s first fusion power plant.

General Fusion has been recognized globally for its work in clean energy technology, and is a member of the Cleantech Global 100 (2014, 2015, 2016/17) as well as the recipient of numerous Canadian and international cleantech awards. In the media, Dr. Laberge’s 2014 TED Talk about fusion energy has attracted over one million viewers, and the company has been featured in publications such as TIME Magazine, Scientific American and BBC Horizons.

Fusion energy has the potential to create a cleaner, safer world, and General Fusion is developing the technology to make it available as soon as possible.

SFU 4D Labs Tour

2019 CAP Congress participants are invited to participate in a tour of 4D Labs on SFU Burnaby Campus.

4D LABS is an applications- and science-driven research institute that offers access to multiple facilities housing state-of-the-art equipment for academic, industrial and government researchers. 4D Labs focuses on accelerating the design and development of advanced functional materials and nanotechnology products that can be successfully applied in a wide variety of fields. The ATLAS ITk Detector Upgrade Lab Tour will be a part of the 4D Labs tour.

Structure of nuclei far from stability, nuclear shapes and shape coexistence, nuclear symmetries, nuclear fission, nucleosynthesis and distribution of elements, instrumentation for nuclear science experiments.

Research interests:

We are interested in interface phenomena of magnetic thin films and 3D nanostructures. We use physical vapor deposition (PVD) to deposit thin film structures and surface techniques to characterize their microstructural properties. Fabrication of nanostructures is done in our lab and 4D Labs. All static
and dynamic magnetic measurements are performed in our lab.
