2020 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Ontario)
is awarded to
Shawn Brooks, University of Toronto Schools (UTS), for advancing the technical capacity for physics education within his school and well beyond, employing a wide range of demonstrations that provide hands on lessons for students. He has had a long record of service to physics education in Ontario including his time as past president, treasurer, and contest director of the Ontario Association of Physics Teachers (OAPT).

2020 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Quebec and Nunavut)
is awarded to
Patrick Mayard, English Montreal School Board, for his innovative and pragmatic methods of teaching physics, for founding a learning center to increase the success rate in science and for his extensive educational works for teachers and students across the province.

The 2020 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (British Columbia and Yukon)
is awarded to
Joseph Muise, St. Thomas More Collegiate, for his involvement in student-centric activities both in and out of the classroom that engage students in modern physics in the real world, and his mentoring of other teachers in the wider physics community for professional development activities.

2020 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Prairies and Northwest Territories)
is awarded to
Ryan Beck, Chinooks Edge School Division, for presenting multiple opportunities to keep physics relevant and accessible to students, a very wide and diverse practice is achieving grants for educating students, and the effort he has put in getting students into the wider world applying physics.

Call for nominations for 2021 CAP Medals will be issued following a review and enhancement of documentation
In June 2019, the Board approved a new strategic plan for the CAP which included the following mission statement: to advocate, communicate and celebrate the role, value and contributions of Canadian physics.
We strive to ensure that our medals and awards celebrate our stated values:
- Excellence and Professionalism
- Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity
- Collegiality and Mentorship
It is clear to the CAP Board that, historically, the slate of nominations for our medals and awards has not generally reflected the diversity of the membership of our community and thus members of underrepresented groups deserving of recognition have been overlooked.
We pledge to do better and are starting by undertaking a complete review of our award nomination and selection guidelines and procedures in advance of the call for 2021 medal and award candidates.
We hope that our membership will help us by putting forward nominations in future years that reflect the diverse excellence of our physics community and our high school/cégep physics teachers.
